Obituary of Jewel Horn
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
JEWEL C. (TIBBETTS) HORN
Jewel Carmen (Tibbetts) Horn passed away on November 30, 2017 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas. She was born on September 1, 1938, in Norton, Kansas, to Earl A. and Nola Stevens Tibbetts of Densmore, Kansas. She lived in Densmore all her early life until leaving for college. She graduated from Densmore High School and Central College, McPherson, Kansas. While at Central College, she participated in a two-piano recital; was on the basketball team; was a member of the choir, which traveled throughout the Midwest; and accompanied voice students on the piano.
Following college, Jewel started her career working for the Federal Government in various places. She worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, in Denver, Colorado. From there, she moved to Iceland where she worked for the U.S. Air Force. While in Iceland, she traveled throughout Europe on vacation. Upon returning to the states, she continued working for the U.S. Air Force in Denver, Colorado. She worked briefly for the Bureau of Reclamation, McCook, Nebraska; and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Window Rock, Arizona. She moved to Manhattan, Kansas, in 1962, and after a brief time in Winfield, Kansas, lived in Manhattan, Abilene, and Chapman the rest of her life. She was employed by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division and Irwin Army Community Hospital, Ft Riley, Kansas, from 1979 until her retirement from there in 1995. Following her retirement from Ft Riley, she was employed by the Kansas State University Foundation in Manhattan, Kansas, and retired from the Foundation on December 31, 2001. She then worked part-time for the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan until she moved from Manhattan in 2010 to Abilene, Kansas.
Her hobbies were playing the piano, which she did for church and other activities; reading, and sports. She loved attending all her children's sporting events, her son Trenton's coaching games, and her grandson Peyton's pedal pulling events, baseball and basketball games.
Jewel met and married Larry D. Horn in 1962. They were blessed with three children, Steven Dale, Trenton Earl, and Larissa Jewel. She and Larry divorced 31 years later.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Jane; and two brothers, Merlin and Norman Tibbetts and his wife Jackie.
She is survived by two sisters, Greta Beth Fletchall and husband Larry, Norton, KS; Anita Dawn Bevill, Norton, KS; and two brothers, Benton Tibbetts, Tucson, AZ; and Merril Tibbetts, Norton, KS; and one sister-in-law, Inge Tibbetts, Derby, KS. She is also survived by her children, Steven Horn and wife Teresa Ramires of Mobile, AL; Trenton Horn of Chapman, KS; and Larissa Horn and husband Matthew Rogowski of Elkton, KY. In addition, she is survived by one grandson, Peyton Bradly Horn, and five granddaughters, Maegan Robinson; Kelsie Ramires; and Andi, Beth, and Emma Rogowski, and numerous nieces and nephews.
