Obituary of Merlin Clyde Menagh
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
MERLIN C. MENAGH
Merlin Clyde Menagh, formerly of Shell Knob, Missouri, passed away September 25, 2015, in Norton, Kansas, at the age of 95.
Merlin was born September 28, 1919, in Mascot, Nebraska, the son of Claude and Isabel Menagh. On May 6, 1942, Merlin and Betty Byrum were united in marriage, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Betty preceded Merlin in death on March 4, 2014. His siblings included a brother, Harold Leroy, sister, Carol Claudine, and infant sister, Stella Margaret.
The couples five children and spouses survive. They include Sharon Drassen and Mel, Golden, Missouri, Michael Menagh and Lora, Centennial, Colorado, Lynn Menagh and Pam, Norton, Kansas, Terry Menagh and Denise, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Steve Menagh and Rhonda, South Bend, Nebraska. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Deceased is great-grandson, Jaxson Menagh.
MC, as he preferred to be called, grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Mascott High School. He received his advance education at Kearney State College and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he received his Masters Degree. His studies were interrupted when MC was called to serve as a weather observer in the Army Air Force, during WWII. While MC was stationed in the European Theater, Betty worked at the Pentagon in Washington. It was in DC that their first child, a daughter, was born. Four sons, all born in Nebraska would follow.
Upon returning to the States, Merlin completed his education and began a long and distinguished career in education. At the age of 28, he was already the superintendent of the Mascot schools, Mascot, Nebraska. During that tenure Merlin taught, coached, and sometimes even drove the school bus. He served Nebraska schools in Elm Creek, Mascot, Albion, Culbertson, Imperial and Ainsworth. His career concluded in 1986 as the Director of School Accreditation for the State of Nebraska.
In 1988, Merlin and Betty left Lincoln and moved to Shell Knob, Missouri where they spend twenty-four happy years. Health issues dictated a move to Norton, Kansas in 2012.
Merlin will be remembered as a man who loved kids and someone who was always there to lend a hand. Whether working for his Church, Trinity Presbyterian, helping the Lives Under Construction Boys Ranch, or serving on the boards of Kornerstone Early Learning and LUC Ranch, he generously gave of his time and talent. Merlin Clyde Menagh lived life to the fullest.
