Not every man is cut for the life of the American farm and West Kansas and all their extremes. Uncle Lyman was. He loved the land and the work. He also loved American farm implements – even finding a way, in his waning years, to memorialize that the most essential, most loved, the most expressive of each farmers character – the pickup.
Uncle Lyman was the last to pass of those of my uncles in the photo. I titled it The Conversation because they were men of conversation. All having come from an agriculture background, high winds and noisy implements, they knew how to use their hands when they spoke, and they did.
Their memory rests as easy a spring horse ride on the buffalo grass prairie and as warm and sweet as a slice of Mom’s gooseberry pie. I’m sure they are all currently in a similar chat sitting somewhere at the hand of God. Since there is no place near Him which is bad, at either hand, maybe it’s the one closest to His heart and facing Jesus.

I am most disappointed to be unable to attend Granddad Lyman's funeral service. Please allow me to share a memory:
When about 7 years old, I suppose, Granddad invited me to ride along as he delivered grain to Ark City, KS. He had a White truck with two hopper trailers, so he had a stint as a trucker, among many other things, as I recall. I was anxious about going along, but my Mom said I had agreed to go, so there was no backing out of it.
Off we went. I learned a few things. Among them: the hill on Hwy 283 just south of Hwy 9 is the biggest hill between Lenora and Ark City; it's better on a diesel engine to idle during lunch than to be shut off and restarted. But most vividly, I recall that Granddad asked me to read the road signs once it became dark. Some years later, I figured that he must have just been trying to get me to visit a bit. But at the time, I thought, "ok, he can't see the signs, and he's driving". Anxiety returned.
Anyway, we returned in one piece. I was able to pick up a model horse for my collection, and got a good memory along the way.

it was with sadness that we heard from Michelle and Alan that Lyman had passed on to a reunion in heaven. Death and its earthly finality is so sad for family and friends; we can't hear him say our name, or that special smile and the all important hugs. Lyman was such a loving and friendly person and always made people feel important and interesting. His special touch in this world will be missed by many. With heart felt prayer and loss, Ray and Ardith Scheetz
