Obituary of Wilma Halderman
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
WILMA (NAVIS) HALDERMAN
Wilma (Navis) Halderman, daughter of Garrett "G.T." and Joanna Wilamena "Minnie" (Simmenlink) Navis, was born April 28, 1925, in Long Island, Kansas, and passed away February 3, 2011, in Syracues, New York, at the age of 85.
Wilma was one of eight children. She graduated from the 8th grade from District 81 in Furnas County, Nebraska, and later earned her GED on May 2, 1977, from Colby Community College. On August 16, 1964, Wilma and Cecil R. Halderman were united in marriage in Norton, Kansas. Together they made their home in Salina, Kansas, then Norton, Holdrege, Nebraska, and later Fort Edward, New York.
Wilma worked in the nursing profession all her life. She served in hospitals and nursing homes in Salina, Norton, Almena, and Holdrege. She loved pediatrics and working in the nursery. She held many nursing certificates and worked as an LPN with a waiver.
Wilma was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Holdrege, the First Baptist Church of Hudson Falls, New York, and Village Baptist Church of Fort Edward. She participated in many activities in the church and especially enjoyed helping to take care of her grandchildren during the services. Cecil and Wilma taught the Junior High Sunday School together. Wilma was a woman of deep faith and she loved the Lord. She read her Bible and prayed always. She loved to sew, quilt, and crochet. She appreciated nature and enjoyed setting out and filling her bird feeders, fishing, traveling, and going on outings with her family. The love and joy of her life was spending time with her three grandchildren enjoying picnics and time spent indoors and outdoors doing many activities together. She especially enjoyed traveling to Maine on vacation to the "Red House."
Survivors include: her daughter, Ila, and husband, Scott Smith, Harrisville, New York; three grandchildren, Adam, Kayla, and Elizabeth; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cecil, in 2006, four children in infancy, seven siblings, Delia, Jennie, Edward, Art, Clarence "Jim," Dena, and Alice; her foster parents, Mildred and Ernest Mayo, and her foster brother, Verle Mayo.
A memorial has been established to the Wilma Halderman Memorial Fund.
