Obituary of Marvin Henry Otto Stutheit

Marvin Henry Otto Stutheit, 89, claimed his Easter victory on Monday, April 5, 2021 at the Norton Andbe Home. He was born the first of five children on March 3, 1932 in Johnson County, Nebraska to Lena (Grauerholz) and Harold Stutheit. The family settled on a farm near Kensington, KS. After graduating from Kensington High School, Marvin attended and graduated from Fort Hays State University majoring in music on a trumpet scholarship. He then enlisted in the Army and was stationed at San Antonio, TX where he played in the Army band. At his first teaching position in Quinter, KS, Marvin met Pheobie Montgomery, the Superintendent of Nurses at the hospital. Marvin and Pheobie were married June 2, 1957 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays, KS. The newlyweds moved to Boulder, CO where Marvin studied and graduated with a Master of Music Degree from the University of Colorado. Marvin accepted a position in Palco, KS to teach music where their only daughter, Sue Ann, was born on music festival day in Hays, KS. The young family moved to Norton in 1962. Marvin then taught music at Jennings, KS and in 1976 moved to the farm Northwest of Norton, where in addition to crops, Marvin raised registered Charolais cattle and planted an extensive garden. He was known for his beautiful gladiolas. Today, the farm is managed by Brian Smith, who trained with Marvin since Brian’s eight grade summer. Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Pheobie of the home; his daughter, Sue Ann of Norton, KS; two sisters, Lela (Gary) Eller of Hays, KS, Helen DaVatz of Olathe, KS and sister-in-law, Sandra Stutheit of Waverly, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Melvin, and Leland Stutheit. Private Family Services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Norton. A public burial service will follow at the Norton Cemetery at approximately 11:15 am. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 pm Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Norton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or the FHSU Marvin Stutheit Instrumental Music Scholarship. Condolences may be left at www.plumergobber.com
