Obituary of Carolyn Strevey

Carolyn Jo (Johnson) Strevey May 16th 1937 to February 3, 2020 Born on May 16, 1937 in Decatur County to Emery and Crystal (Brunk) Johnson. Carolyn grew up on the family farm close to Norcatur spending her youth in the house her grandfather built and attending school in Norcatur, Kansas. She started playing the piano in grade school and attended the Rocky Mountain Music Academy in Estes Park, Colorado where she developed her love of music. In 1955 she graduated from Norcatur High and moved to Denver to attend the Parks business school and worked. She married her high school sweetheart Glen Strevey February 3, 1956 in Boulder Colorado and was married for 64 years. Carolyn and Glen lived in the Denver area starting a family and working. They moved to Lawrence, Kansas where Carolyn worked at the University of Kansas school of education and Hallmark cards. Carolyn loved being a mother and by the time Carolyn and Glen moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1961, the family had grown to 5 with sons Greg (4), Dan (2) and daughter Lisa being just 4 weeks old. She devoted herself to the kids, playing music and supporting the growing family. By 1964 the family had grown to 6 with the birth of son, Tom. Soon they moved to Rocket City (Huntsville, Alabama) and lived close to Marshall Space Flight Center (Redstone Arsenal) where the Saturn 5 booster rocket was being tested for the Moon mission. The family settled down in Boulder in 1965 where she raised four kids, and helped to raise her grandchildren. She shared her love of music, literature and art with her children, grandchildren and others by volunteering for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and, when the Boulder Chorale was being formed, she played piano. She attended the University of Colorado and graduated in 1981 with a minor in music and a major in accounting. She had many pets throughout her life but she was especially fond of cats. She traveled to many places in the world returning to Europe frequently and the far east. She enjoyed experiencing and connecting with local cultures and customs, even if it was risky at times. She always saw the best in everyone and everything. In 2008 Carolyn returned to her Kansas roots on the family farm. She renovated the house where she grew up and she spent the final years of her life surrounded by family and friends. The family grew over the years to 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren living in different countries and cultures. She is survived by her husband Glen Strevey, Brother Von(Joy) Johnson, Brother in law Bob (Kay) Strevey, Children Greg, Dan, Lisa and Tom,14 Grandchildren and 6 Great grandchildren.
