I am heartbroken over the passing of Dr. G. I grew up in Nebraska City and graduated in 1984 when he was the President of Peru State College. I have a card he sent me, You made the News! With a newspaper clipping in 1984 hand written and signed by him. A recruitment strategy by Peru for local residents. Who would know that I would eventually work for he and Blake at now NAU in Rapid City in 1994 so many years later. I love Dr. G and Shirley with all my heart. We became friends. Shirley and I were in Finances For The Future (FFF) a women’s group we organized to trade stocks along with Gina Faulkner. Dr. G. was so kind to me and we shared many stories and laughs. I remember a flight we took on the school plane together, one of many. He was reading a book in large font, “Callahan goes Down”. I asked him, Dr G, Do you think that is an appropriate book to be reading while we are on a plane flight? He chuckled with his unique and hearty laugh, you have a point. On another flight, I said, Dr. G, the plane monitor reads KC to Rapid City, KRAP, that isn’t a good sign. He said assuringly, Oh, Susan, you don’t have to worry until it reads, “Oh, KRAP!”
He was so instrumental in influencing my life and career in Higher Education. He guided me without our ever telling me what to do. He had a way of letting you asked for advice without ever giving it but allowing you to self discover the answer simply by asking you questions. He encouraged and supported me in receiving my Doctorate. I remember him telling me completing a Ph. D. Isn’t a measure of intelligence but a measure of persistence”. He recommended me as a Peer Reviewer to HLC where he provided years of valuable contribution. His quotes, “No hill for a stepper” and others long live in my memory. I love that whenever we were out for a company dinner or at Arrow Head Country Club in RC he had a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on top for dessert. He was the real deal. I loved him
and he so influenced my life. My heart breaks at his passing. Many prayers and love being sent to you during this difficult time. He was a true Gem! Susan Wurtele
