Obituary of Robert Mapes, Jr.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
ROBERT MAPES, JR.
Robert Mapes, Jr., passed away at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 28, 2019, at the age of 89. Bob was born to loving parents, Robert Sr. and Bessie (Martin) Mapes on March 1, 1930, on the family farm north of Norcatur, Kansas.
Bob attended rural grade school and graduated from the Norcatur High School. On September 25, 1949, he married his sweetheart, Joyce Poage, in Norton, Kansas. They made their home in Lenora and the rural Norcatur communities before moving into Norton in 1970. Bob was a farmer and loved to think of new ways to make his farming practices easier and more efficient. With this in mind, Bob invented the Mapes-O-Matic Livestock Sprayer and the business of Mapes Manufacturing was born.
Bob was a member of the Norton Christian Church and the Norcatur Elks Lodge. He also previously served as a member of the Norton City Council. He enjoyed trap shooting and fishing but his greatest joy was spending time outdoors on the farm and with his family.
Survivors include: his wife, Joyce Mapes; three children, John (Lee) Mapes, Norton; Rocky (Rona) Mapes, Thornton, Colorado; and Susan (Allen) Perkins, Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Mary Lee Aguilar, Ostega, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
