Obituary of Dean LeRoy Wilnerd

DEAN L. WILNERD

 

Dean LeRoy Wilnerd, son of Charles Harsel and Lela Clessie (Peterson) Wilnerd, was born December 17, 1923, in rural Norton County, Kansas, and passed away at the Andbe Home in Norton, Kansas, on August 1, 2018, at the age of 94.

Dean grew up in the Calvert/Almena community in Norton County. He attended the Calvert Rural Grade School and graduated from the Almena Rural High School. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Norton County where he farmed with his father in the Norcatur area. On February 4, 1951, Dean and Adelia Lavond Cate were united in marriage in the Almena Congregational Church. They made their home in rural Calvert/Almena where they farmed and raised their family. In their later years, they moved to Norton, where they lived in Whispering Pines before moving to the Andbe Home.

Dean was a member of the Almena Congregational Church where he served on the church board. He was a member and had served as Past Commander Adjutant and Service Officer of the Paul D. Linnell American Legion Post #266 of Almena. Upon the closing of the legion chapter, he became a member of the Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post #63 in Norton. Dean was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a charter member of the Norton Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was proud of his 74 years of continuous membership in the American Legion.

Survivors include: his wife, Adelia, of the Andbe Home in Norton; two daughters, Nancy (Dave) Hogan, Long Island, Kansas; Gayle (Royal) Tacha, Hoxie, Kansas; five grandchildren, Justin (Debbie) Hogan, Densmore, Kansas; Travis (Mandy) Hogan, Norton; Dillon Hogan (Cheyenne Simoni,) Long Island; Ashley Brown (Austin Brooks,) Norton; Garrett Tacha, Goodland, Kansas; 11 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kylor and Jensen Hogan, Mason, Delila, Karlene and Boone Hogan, Brynna and Ayden Brown, Josephine and Tucker Tacha; two sisters, Wanda Mechsner, Norton; Betty (David) Carter, Haysville, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Margorie Cate, Lawrence, Kansas; two nieces, Wendi (Roger) Stamback and family, and Debora (Richard) Rawlings and family ; three nephews, Ronald Cate, Philip (Megan) Cate, and Richard (Barbara) Cate; other relatives and many friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers-in-law, Harold DeWayne Davis, Jack Mechsner and Robert Cate, one niece, Debra Davis, and two nephews, Michael and Scott Davis.
