Obituary of Frances Whitney

IN LOVING MEMORY OF FRANCES A. WHITNEY Frances Anna Whitney, daughter of Roy and Olive Eve (Kinser) Gnagy, was born November 6, 1917, in rural Clayton, Kansas, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, on September 27, 2010, at the age of 92. Frances grew up in Last Chance and Brush, Colorado and attended the schools there. She later received her GED. On October 29, 1939, Frances and John Wesley Whitney were united in marriage in Norton. They made their home in Beatrice, Nebraska, and later moved to Norton where she was a homemaker and worked in surgery at the Norton Tuberculosis Sanitarium. She later served as the head of the housekeeping department at the Norton State Hospital. Her husband, Wes, passed away April 21, 2009. Frances was a member of the Norton Christian Church, Order of Eastern Star, and the Squarenaders square dance club. She was also an avid lover of Bluejay sports for which she received the Bluejay Booster Award. Survivors include: seven children, Kay Lene, and husband, Dick Hahn, Norton; Anita Wyatt, Norton; Janet, and husband, Richard Meyers, Norton; Neva Jo, and husband, Garrett Beydler, Norton; Patricia, and husband, Scott Smiley, Avondale, Colorado; John Whitney, Norton; and Evan, and wife, Barb Whitney, Norton; 27 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy, and wife, Mary Gnagy, Norton; John Gnagy, of Alaska; two brothers-in-law, Ed, and wife, Joan Whitney and Mel Erhardt, all of Norton; two sisters, May Pearl Maddy, Riverside, California; and Jo Holub, Barstow, California; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Malcolm and Sylva Whitney, both of Norton; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Donald and Kay Gnagy, one sister, Neva Erhardt, one granddaughter, Robin Wyatt, her parents-in-law, C.E. and Emma Whitney, brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Leon Maddy, Mel Holub, Arthur Whitney, Lewis and Nellie Whitney, Vernon and Maxine Whitney, Fred and Alpharetta Williamson, Andrew Malcolm, Dottie Gnagy, and Beth Gnagy. Memorials may be made to Norton Christian Church.
