Obituary of Andrew C. Weskamp

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

ANDREW C. WESKAMP

Andrew Clarence Weskamp, son of Andrew C. and Dardenella (Jeffers) Weskamp, was born August 14, 1940, in McCook, Nebraska, and passed away at his home in Norton, Kansas, on May 19, 2017, at the age of 76.

Andy grew up in McCook, attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and graduated from McCook Senior High School. On May 18, 1960, Andy and his high school sweetheart, Charlene Marie Miller, were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook, Nebraska. They made their home in various communities including San Diego and Los Alamitos California, Bremerton, Washington, McCook, Nebraska and Olathe, Kansas, before moving to Norton in the summer of 1973. Andy was a Laboratory Supervisor and Technician at the Norton County Hospital for many years. He was on call every other night and every other weekend for 30 years. He was very dedicated to his work and loyal to his patients.

Andy was a Veteran of the United States Navy where he served 10 years with Distinction. The Navy trained him as a corpsman at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego and toured on the U.S.S. Columbus, a guided missile cruiser. He later returned to Balboa Hospital and completed laboratory technician school. He medically retired to the rank of Corpsman, First Class. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Navy never left him, as friends and family will attest. Andy loved his country and sacrificed time away from his family during many Navy cruises.

Andy was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post #63 in Norton. He had also served as a pioneer in bringing the American Red Cross Blood Bank to McCook. In this adventure, Andy served as the first American Red Cross President for the McCook chapter.

Andy was an avid fisherman and most days could be found somewhere at Sebelius Lake. He could also be found paying it forward at fast food drive-thru joints, and helping others in need. His faith was inspirational, and in his quiet way, he led many to Jesus. Andy's love of the Lord showed in his strong and loving family. "He was a good man. A man of few words, but mighty in what he did".

Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Charlene, of their home in Norton; three children and their spouses, Daniel and Carolyn Weskamp, Nixa, Missouri; Andrea and James Buchmeier, Littleton, Colorado; and Dominic and Kayla Weskamp, Battlefield, Missouri; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; one brother, Michael David, Aurora, Colorado; other relatives and friends.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Christopher Andrew, and one infant grandson, John Andrew Buchmeier.
