Obituary of Etta Hays
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
ETTA JANE (VOSS) HAYS
Etta Jane (Voss) HAYS of Golden, Colorado, daughter of Peter Chester and Irene (FREDERICK) VOSS was born on March12, 1932 and died on November 6, 2016 at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 25 days. Etta was born in the family home on a farm near Densmore, Norton County, Kansas.
She had polio at age 3 and regained the use of a paralyzed arm. She attended a one room country school and graduated from Edmond High School in 1950. She worked at the welfare office in Norton until she married Robert Lee HAYS on May 12, 1953 at the Voss family home. Their honeymoon was the drive to Riverside California where Robert was stationed in the Air Force. The couple farmed for 3 years near Prairie View, Kansas; lived in Lawrence, Kansas for 4 years; and finally settled in Golden, Colorado in 1960, living in the same house for 54 years. She received a PHT (Putting Hubby Through) degree from the University of Kansas in 1960 and a Real Estate license in 1969, and an Associate Degree in Real Estate from Community College of Denver in 1978. For many years she visited family members and researched family histories. She wrote and published books on the history of the Voss-Bruinkool, Jeffries, Hays-Schesser, McGarity-Ruperl-Wyatt, and Hinman-Frederick Families and a Irene Voss cookbook. She is a member of the "Daughters of American Revolution".
In her retirement years she traveled with Robert to England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, New Zealand and China. She visited all 50 states of the United States and spent 20 summers traveling in the US and Canada in travel trailers visiting family, friends and attending bluegrass festivals and other events.
Etta was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother, Jack. She is buried in the Norton, Kansas Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband Robert, three children Kathy (Carl STANG) of Colleyville, Texas, Phillip (Darlene FOUGERE) of Woodenville, Washington and Paul (Robbie DIXON) of Lafayette, Colorado, four grandsons, Peter and David STANG and Kyle and Tyler HAYS, and her brothers, Chester VOSS of Hill City, Kansas and Robert VOSS of Lee Summit, Missouri.
