Obituary of Erma D. Hackney

IN LOVING MEMORY OF ERMA D. HACKNEY Erma D. Hackney, daughter of Joseph Cass and Hilda (Saltzman) Perrill, was born April 14, 1914, in rural Jennings, Kansas, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, on August 4, 2016, at the age of 102. Erma grew up in Decatur County, Kansas, south of Jennings until the sixth grade when the family moved to Lenora, Kansas. She attended the Allison school. On November 10, 1945, Erma and Herman Hackney were united in marriage in Oberlin, Kansas. They lived in Oberlin and Grand Junction, Colorado, until Herman's death in 1978. Erma moved to Norton in the early 80s. Erma had worked in hospitals in the dietary and housekeeping departments. Erma was a member of the Norton Christian Church. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW, and the Eagles in Grand Junction, and also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Norton. She was best known for her cooking and was said to be the oldest cook in Kansas. She enjoyed cooking for all the class reunions and many other dinners and she cooked at the Norton American Legion until her retirement at the age of 95. Her greatest love was her family and being very close and active with them. Survivors include: two sisters, Mable Bohl and Gladys Minshall, both of Norton; one brother-in-law, Loys Grove, Dodge City, Kansas; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Erma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Lewis, Lloyd, and Elmer Perrill, and four sisters, Ellen, Millie, Ivalee, and Ida Mae.
