Obituary of Doris Johnston

IN LOVING MEMORY OF DORIS D. JOHNSTON Doris Darlene Johnston, 89, passed on to her heavenly home on February 8, 2016. Doris was born in rural St. John, Kansas on December 5, 1926, to Floid and Alta (Hathaway) Miller. Doris grew up on the family farm north of St. John and attended Kennelworth Grade School. She then attended St. John High School where she graduated with the Class of 1944. Doris went on to attend Friends University in Wichita for one year with an accounting major and transferred to Wichita Business College and graduated in 1946. Doris married Doug Johnston on July 21, 1946, and celebrated 69 years of marriage. Doris and Doug moved to Lindsborg, Kansas and Bethany College where Doris was assistant Treasurer and Doug received his Bachelor's Degree in Music in 1950. They lived in Bunkerhill, Douglass, Sylvia, and Norton, spending five summers at Colorado University in Boulder, Colorado where Doris worked in Administration offices and Doug received his Masters of Music Education Degree in 1955. Doris was a member of Eastern Star for several years, holding many offices and one year was Worthy Grand Matron. She was also a member of Women's Federated Club for 53 years. Doris was an accountant for a Chevrolet dealership in Sylvia for nine years and for Rowh Motor Company in Norton for 20 years. After Doug retired they became Winter Texans for 24 years in Harlingen, Texas. While down South, Doris took classes in Hardanger and completed many beautiful pieces and won many awards over 20 years. In travels they visited every state in the Union but one. They took eight cruises, 28 tours, and visited Canada and nine countries in Europe. Survivors include: her loving husband, Doug Johnston, Norton; one daughter, Cindy McMullen, Norton; two sons, Dr. Bruce Johnston, and wife, Kathy, Sun Rise Beach, MO; Jeff Johnston, San Francisco, CA.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, William Miller, Dodge City, Ks.; one sister, Fern Tompkins, Great Bend, Ks.; many other relatives and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Evelyn Frisbie; son-in-law, Don McMullen; and brother-in-law, Kenny Tompkins. FUNERAL SERVICE – Friday, February 12, 2016 –10:30 A.M.
