Don Brooks

Obituary of Don B. Brooks

IN LOVING MEMORY OF DON B. BROOKS Don B. Brooks, son of Harry and Cynthia (Moore) Brooks, was born March 3, 1928 at their home near Clayton, Kansas, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital, on October 17, 2015, at the age of 87. Don was five years old when the family moved to a farm south of Edmond, Kansas in 1933. He attended the Sand Creek Country School west of the family farm. Don graduated from Edmond High School with the class of 1946. He enjoyed riding his horse "Ole Bill" to and from school. On February 18, 1950, Don married Betty Riemann in Logan, Kansas. They made their home on the Brooks family farm until 1954 when they moved to their own farm west of Edmond. To this union three children were born, Dennis, Kathy and Jan. Don's greatest joy was farming the land, but his cattle were his special pride. He believed in keeping his cattle as well fed as himself. Don had many talents including carpentry, mechanic, electrician, and inventing anything he needed. His greatest love was his children, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Don loved to spoil all the grandkids, he bought a "Gator" for them and they rode it every time they came to the farm where they made many wonderful memories. Don and Betty also enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and visiting with neighbors and friends. Don was baptized into the Catholic faith in December 2011. He is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. In 2009, with the deterioration of his mental status, Don and Betty gave up 60 years of farm life to move to their current home in Norton. Their home was conveniently located behind Dairy Queen since ice cream was a favorite treat of Don's. Survivors include: his wife, Betty Brooks, of their home in Norton; three children, Dennis Brooks, Norton; Kathy, and husband, Leo Chouinard, Newton, Ks; Jan, and husband, Mike Volgamore, Norton; eight grandchildren, Brent Brooks, Colby, Ks; Marc, and wife, Aubrey Brooks, Hays, Ks; Shana, and husband, Adam Tilman, Broken Arrow, OK; Derek Volgamore, Wichita, KS; Jeremy, and wife, Morgan Kaufman, Newton, KS; Kayleigh, and husband, Craig Berning, Leoti, KS; Reesa, and husband, Keith Allen, Wichita, KS; Trevor, and wife, Katelyn Kaufman, Wichita, KS; four great-grandchildren, Peyton and Parker Brooks; Kellen and Cameron Brooks.
