Obituary of W. Lester Conkey
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
W. LESTER CONKEY
Warren Lester Conkey, son of Warren E. and Eleanor E. (Long) Conkey, was born March 16, 1923, in Edmond, Kansas, and passed away at his home in rural Edmond December 2014, at the age of 91.
Lester grew up in the Edmond community and attended the Edmond schools. Lester served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was one of the first Allied Forces to occupy Tokyo, Japan, on September 8, 1945, at the flag raising at the American Embassy and as a guard of honor at the Imperial Hotel. Lester was a lifelong farmer with his brother, Claud, who passed away in 2011. Lester continued to live on the farm until his death.
Lester was a member of the Edmond Christian Church and a life member of the American Legion. Lester was an inventor of a two-wheeled car and he enjoyed collecting antique tractors and going to tractor shows. He was a good mechanic and also enjoyed cooking and square dancing. He was a great multi-tasker and loved surprising people with making them just about anything.
Survivors include: one nephew and wife, Carl and Jnell Conkey, Edmond; two great-nephews, Adam Conkey, Edmond; Ian, and wife, Deedre Conkey, Hays, Kansas; cousins, other relatives and friends.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lloyd and Claud, and one sister-in-law, Faye (Kidder) Conkey.
