Obituary of John H Burd
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
JOHN H. BURD
John Henry Burd, son of Homer R. and Eva Mowry Burd, was born August 6, 1927, in Martin, South Dakota, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital on October 12, 2014, at the age of 87.
John moved from South Dakota to Norton County with his family as a small child. He attended country schools near Almena and Prairie View and public schools in Almena and Norton. He was the oldest of four siblings. The family lived throughout most of his youth on a farm northwest of Almena in Harrison Township. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946 and served honorably in Korea. He was united in marriage on August 1, 1948, with Ellen Elizabeth Field at her parents' home west of Almena. John was a successful Norton County farmer throughout his life. He served on the Board of Directors at the Almena State Bank. He was a member of the Paul D. Linnel post of the American Legion in Almena for many years. He was also a member of the Naphalti Masonic Lodge in Almena.
John enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. He was a skilled welder and metalworker and as a young man made many tools and pieces of equipment for use on his farm. He often repaired equipment for his friends and neighbors. In his later years he was an avid woodworker and furniture maker.
Survivors include: one son, Steve; two grandsons; Jonathan and Christian; one sister, JoAnn Ankenman, her husband John and family; one brother, Jan Burd and family of Texas; special family members, Lynette Donaldson and family, Larry and Ann Griffin, daughter Julie and family; Chance and Amy McKinney and family, and many other family members and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ellen, and one brother, Jimmie.
A memorial fund has been established to the Almena Library and Almena Community Center
