Obituary of Vernon Lee Heitman

IN LOVING MEMORY OF VERNON L. HEITMAN Vernon Lee Heitman, son of Bert and Velma (Davis) Heitman, was born April 15, 1920, in Norcatur, Kansas, and passed away at his home in Whispering Pines in Norton, Kansas, on July 31, 2013, at the age of 93. Vernon attended his elementary school years at the Dallas School, one year of high school at the Clayton High School and his remaining high school years at the Norton Community High School. He also graduated from Kansas State University in May of 1951, and served in the U.S. Army. On July 4, 1942, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Brown in Abilene, Texas. They made their home in Norton from 1944 until 1950 at which time they moved to Manhattan, Kansas, for one year, then returned to Norton. Vernon retired from the Norton Post Office after 41 years with the last years of his employment as the Postmaster. His wife, Betty, passed away March 27, 2008. He continued to live on their farm east of Norton until recently moving to Whispering Pines. Vernon was a member of the Community Full Gospel Church in Norton from 1944 until 1972, when he transferred his membership to the Norton Church of God. He was also a member of the Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post #63. Survivors include: four children, John (Carolyn) Heitman, Montgomery, Alabama; Beverly (James) Burns, Norton; Myron (Roberta) Heitman, Sacramento, California; and Elaine Heitman, Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one brother, Larry (Carol) Heitman, Laotta, Indiana; one sister, Patricia (Glenn) Salmons, Dupont, Colorado; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, Evan Dean, Paul, Hubert, and Don Heitman, and one sister, Twila Dague. A memorial has been established to the Norton Church of God.
