Obituary of Delbert "Red" Wayne Berry

IN LOVING MEMORY OF DELBERT W. "RED" BERRY Delbert Wayne "Red" Berry, son of Newel H. "Happy" and Fern (Georgeson) Berry, was born April 20, 1928, on the family farm north of Lenora, Kansas, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, on July 28, 2013, at the age of 85. Delbert grew up on the farm where he was born, graduated from Lenora Rural High School with the class of 1946, and attended Kansas State University until joining the U.S. Navy in 1951. On July 15, 1954, he and Patricia Hoffnagle were united in marriage in Denver, Colorado. They made their home in California until Delbert was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955, then returned to Kansas where they lived on Bow Creek in Graham County before moving to Lenora where Delbert farmed with his father. Delbert was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, a member and Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and served for many years as treasurer of the Prairie Dog Shrine Club. He was a member of the Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post #63, and served on the boards of a number of organizations including the USD 213 Board of Education, the Andbe Home, the Lenora Volunteer Fire Department, the Lenora Coop, and Highland Township. In retirement, Delbert and Pat enjoyed "snow-birding" in Arizona and traveled within and outside the United States, but throughout his life, family was most important. Survivors include: wife, Patricia Berry, Norton, Kansas; daughter, Dawn Berry, Logan, Kansas; brother, Joe Berry, Norton, Kansas; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Delbert was preceded in death by three infant siblings, his parents, and his elder brother, Hardy. Memorials have been established to the Shriner's Children's Hospital and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
