Rea grew up on the family farm and attended rural grade school and Decatur County High School. He served in the U.S. Army. On July 9, 1951, Rea and Deloris "Dee" Hahn were united in marriage in New Almelo, Kansas. They lived in Chicago, Illinois, while Rea was attending college at the American Television Institute of Technology. He received a B.S. degree in Engineering and they moved to Denver, Colorado, where he started a television repair business for a few years. His career job was an Aerospace Engineer in Guidance Control with Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin) helping to put the first men on the moon. After retirement, they returned to the Norcatur area in 1984.
Rea was a very active member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Norton. He enjoyed fishing, camping, doing yard work, traveling, and going to auctions but his greatest love was his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren.
