Obituary of Carolyn L. DeBates
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
CAROLYN L. DeBATES
Carolyn Lenore DeBates, eldest daughter of Abe Joseph and Pearl (Steiner) Hoppenwaffer, was born March 21, 1941, in Bronx, New York, and passed away at her home in Norton, Kansas, on May 8, 2013, at the age of 71.
Carolyn grew up in New York and graduated from the Monroe High School in Bronx. She married in New York and had two children, Tyrone and Elaina. Her husband served in the U.S. Army and they made their home in Germany and Maryland where he was stationed. They later divorced and Carolyn moved to Kansas. On April 30, 1994, she married John DeBates in Norton, where they made their home. Her son, Ty, passed away as the result of an accident and her husband, John passed away February 19, 2012.
Carolyn was a member of the Norton Christian Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Elaina Woods, Ft. Smith, Arkansas; one daughter-in-law, Connie Chandler, Norton; step-children, Damen DeBates, Des Moines, Iowa; Nola and Wray Bassett, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; T.J. DeBates, Salasaw, Arkansas; and John "J.P." DeBates, Mason City, Iowa; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Barbara Jacobs, New Port Ritchey, Florida; Helene DePalma, Bronx, New York; nieces and nephews, Marcy, Paige, Jarrett, Jaden, Scott, and Joel; other relatives and friends.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, Ty Chandler.
A memorial has been established to the Carolyn DeBates Memorial Fund.
