Obituary of Ivy Emma Bell Rolland
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
IVY E.B. ROLLAND
Ivy Emma Bell (Thiesen) Rolland, third child of Karsten Charlie and Nora Florence (Steele) Thiesen, was born February 20, 1913, on the family farm south of Clayton, Kansas, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, on January 11, 2013, at the age of 99.
Ivy grew up in the Clayton community and attended the Clayton schools. Following her graduation from the Clayton High School she attended one year of Normal Training in Oberlin. She taught school for four years in two rural Decatur County schools. On June 1, 1935, Ivy and Cleo Earnest Rolland were united in marriage in Wakeeney, Kansas. They made their home in Clayton before moving to San Diego, California, during the war years. While in California, Ivy owned a photography and art studio. They returned to Kansas in 1949, and came to Norton in 1951. In 1964, Cleo and Ivy bought the furniture store from Gordon Brantley and Esther Scott. They semi-retired in 1972, and Ivy opened up her upholstery and drapery shop. Cleo passed away in 1984. Ivy continued to live in their home until recently at which time she moved to the Andbe Home.
Ivy was an active member of the Norton Christian Church where she had served as President of the Women's Council, the Cradle Roll and Beginner's Sunday School teacher for 15 years, and helped with children's church for five years. Ivy served as a Girl Scout Leader and on the Andbe Home Board for 16+ years. She was a member of the L.D. Club, Avon Federated Study Club, and the Prairie Painters Club where she also served as President. She was an artist at heart and enjoyed working in her yard and garden but her greatest joy in life was her family.
