Obituary of Lyman Carl Rowh

IN LOVING MEMORY LYMAN C. ROWH Lyman Carl Rowh, 86, passed on to his heavenly home on November 14, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. Lyman was born in rural Clayton, Kansas, on August 21, 1926. Lyman grew up on the family farm near Clayton, Kansas, and attended grade school at Buzzard Roost School, north of Clayton. His favorite activities as a boy were riding horses, herding cows, and playing with the neighbor children. He started school in Clayton in 5th grade, and in the 7th grade discovered his wife to be, Georgia Davis, of Clayton. Lyman graduated with the Clayton High School class of 1944, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 26, 1944. He received basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, then his overseas duty in WWII was in Guam, where he served his country honorably until discharged on June 24, 1946. Lyman and Georgia Lea Davis were married August 14, 1946. On August 14, 2012, they celebrated 66 years of marriage. To this union were born four children, Jay, Jim, Carla, and Jon. Soon after they married, they moved to Denver where he enrolled at Denver University, to pursue a degree in social studies. After teaching in Norton on a provisional certificate from 1946 to 1949, he returned to Denver and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor's degree in 1952. He completed a Master's degree in 1954. He taught and was an administrator in the Norton Public School system until 1960, when he went into business at Mizell Motor Company in downtown Norton. He was the proprietor of Rowh Motor Company from 1965 until 1986, then worked for Scheetz Motor Company until 1991. Upon retirement, he worked for Manhattan Christian College as a development liaison, a job he enjoyed until 2002. Lyman enjoyed studying history, watching sporting events, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He served as an elder and Sunday School teacher at the Norton Christian Church. He also participated in many local Norton community activities, including Norton Chamber of Commerce, Norton Lions Club, Norton City Council, and was also a Norton Chamber Ambassador. Lyman was preceded in death by his parents, Carson and Pearl Rowh; brother, Don; and sister, Norma Baldridge. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; sons, Jay, and wife, Rita Rowh, Beloit; Jim Rowh of Clayton; Jon, and wife, Patty Rowh, Norton; and daughter and husband, Carla and John Pilkington, Oakley; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Memorials have been established to Manhattan Christian College, Norton Christian Church, or the donor's choice.
