Obituary of Alberta Elaine Byrum-Slaby

IN LOVING MEMORY OF ALBERTA E. BYRUM-SLABY Alberta Elaine (Rieg) Byrum-Slaby, daughter of Oscar William and Bessie Mae (Rutledge) Rieg, was born September 9, 1930, in Inavale, Nebraska, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, on October 18, 2012, at the age of 82. Alberta grew up in Kearney, Nebraska, graduating from the Kearney High School with the class of 1948, and Kearney State University with a degree in education. On December 16, 1951, Alberta and Jeptha Jay Byrum were united in marriage at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kearney. They made their home in Norton where they were both teachers at the Norton Community High School. Her husband, Jep, passed away in 1983. On November 18, 1993, she married Roger LeRoy Slaby. They also made their home and maintained a business in Norton. Roger passed away in 2002. She continued to live in Norton where she was very active in many community services. Alberta was a very active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Norton and was currently President of the local Rotary and Delta Kappa Gamma chapters. She was very instrumental in bringing the Northwest Kansas Library to Norton and in the remodel of the Norton Theater where she worked many hours on it's behalf. Survivors include: three children, James Byrum, and wife, Debra Dudley, Council Grove, Kansas; Kristine Kay, and husband, Von Fahrenbruch, and Warren William Byrum, all of Norton; two grandchildren, Kiel, and wife, Kristen Fahrenbruch, Norton; Kayla, and husband, Shane Pfannenstiel, Kansas City, Kansas; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Honor Fahrenbruch and Sofia Honor Pfannenstiel; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Goedeken, Franklin, Nebraska; Betty, and husband, Merlyn Menagh, Norton; several nephews and niece including Lynn and wife, Pam Menagh, of Norton; one cousin, Maria Jackson, Rantoul, Illinois; other relatives and many friends. She is also survived by her loving canine companion, Mattie. Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, and one granddaughter, Honor Elizabeth Fahrenbruch. Memorials may be made to Alberta Byrum-Slaby Memorial Fund.
